The letters MH stand for Metal Halide. Of the two kind of HID lights, metal halides have the more balanced spectrum. They will bathe plants in light from the bluer end of the spectrum, which indicates to the plant that it's spring and time for growth. Generally speaking, Metal Halide light is used for plants which are encouraged to grow many leaves and become bushy such as lettuce, spinach, cabbage and herbs. They are also excellent for the vegetative stages of growth. They promote tight internodal spacing between branches, and help the plants to develop thick stems and large greener leaves which will support later fruit and flower growth.

Your light should be chosen based on a few main variables. How much area do you need to cover with the light? How many plants do you want to grow? Do these plants require a lot of energy (such as tomatoes and eggplants) or are they lower on the needs level, like African violets. Look below for estimations of what each light size is good for. Digital ballasts are the new thing in indoor grow lights. Digital grow lights are capable of running either a Metal Halide or High Pressure Sodium bulb. They use less energy to produce the same amount of light than the old 'core and coil' magnetic ballasts do. They are significantly lighter weight and more streamlined than their old-fashioned counterparts. Most of our customers prefer the Lumatek Digital Ballasts as they produce up to 20% more lumens than a standard lighting system.
