As the holidays rapidly approach, here are some gift ideas for your favorite grower(s) for under $50!

ARS Scissors

These scissors can be used almost anywhere! These soft-bow scissors are a quick snipper for bonsai, small plants, flower stems, tape, string, and even electric wire. High carbon steel blades are hard chrome plated and marquench hardened to stay sharp longer than normal blades. Softbow handles provide all day comfort and are designed for either left or right hand use. Length: 6.25″.

ARS Scissors retail on igrowhydro.com for $19.95.

ONA Odor Gel Pail

ONA (Odor Neutralizing Agent) products are designed using scientific principles of molecular bonding. Two odors can offset one another when they combine to form a bond. ONA’s active ingredients come from a blend of 32 essential oils and plant-derived compounds that bond with and neutralize a wide array of odors. Add ONA Gel to misting systems or humidifiers or dispense in rooms up to 10,000 square feet with the ONA Storm Treatment System (ONA Gel not included). Also available is the ONA Breeze for areas up to 1,500 square feet. A 4-liter pail lasts 4-6 weeks in the ONA Breeze, a 20-liter pail lasts 12-16 weeks in the ONA Storm.

The ONA Odor Gel Pail retails for $29.95 on igrowhydro.com

Scorpion Juice

Plants have both constitutive and induced mechanisms which aid them in their defense against diseases, and over the course of their evolution have developed a series of complex defense systems to fight pathogen invasions. Dr. Hornby’s Scorpion Juice triggers a plant’s defense mechanisms by inducing a systemic acquired resistance (SAR) in the plant cells. This acts as a vaccination for your plants, which quickly build immune responses to a diverse variety of pathogens including viruses, fungi, and bacteria. This immunity response is particularly evident in resin producing plants which show substantial increases in resin production when the plants defense mechanisms are activated. In addition, a marked increase in flower production, flower size and essential oil fragrance can also be seen. Dr. Hornby’s Scorpion Juice also enhances general stress resistance and is great for helping protect plants against frost damage when you’re trying to extend your season as far as it will go.

Scorpion Juice retails on igrowhydro.com for $37.95.

PE-2 Infared Temp Gun

The PE-2 unit adds a much requested red sighting laser, and an expanded temperature range to 482F (easily switchable to 250C). The PE-2 has an adjustable emissivity setting for precise calibration, and perhaps best of all, a tight infrared “cone” distance to spot ratio (D:S) of 8:1. That means at a distance of 8 inches, you are reading an area just 1 inch in diameter. At a distance of 2 feet, an area of just 3 inches.

The PE-2 Infrared Temp Gun retails for $49.95 on igrowhydro.com.

These are just a few ideas from the many products available at the already low prices on igrowhydro.com. Please visit the website and discover all the other products available for gifts for your favorite grower(s), or for yourself!

With its super tough, high quality, fully waterproof design, the Bluelab Truncheon has proven itself for years.

The amazing Bluelab Truncheon Meter EC meter lights up to show the EC, CF and PPM readings. Truncheons are very accurate, reliable and no calibration is required. It’s stick-like design makes it great for stirring your nutrient tank too! This Bluelab meter will last for years and comes with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. Powered by 3 AA batteries. With its super tough, high quality, fully waterproof design, the Bluelab Truncheon Meter has proven itself for years.

What is it used for?

The Truncheon Meter measures the amount of dissolved solids in a solution and gives you a conductivity reading. To maintain optimum plant growth and phenomenal crops, you need to know what the conductivity of the solution is before feeding your plants and while they are growing. If the solution is too weak, your plants will miss out on the vital elements they need to grow. Too strong and you risk root burn, especially if evaporation occurs within your growing environment. The nutrient solution needs to be measured regularly so you know when to add more concentrated solution or when to add fresh water. Without a Truncheon Meter to measure it, you are only guessing and risk crop failure.

How do you use it?

There is no easier conductivity meter to use than the Bluelab Truncheon Meter! How simple is it to use? To find the conductivity of your solution, simply place the probe head into the solution for 1-2 minutes (automatically turns on) to reach the same temperature of your nutrient. Remove from the solution (automatically turns off) and place back in. The bright, easy to read Blue LED’s will flash next to a number(s) on the scale of your choosing. Rinse the probe after use in fresh water to stop nutrient salts building up on the probe face and clean once a week to ensure the Truncheon Nutrient Meter remains accurate. It is fully waterproof so if you drop it in the tank or into the swimming pool, it’s OK!

What is conductivity?

Conductivity is the total soluble salts contained within a liquid solution. Because pure water does not conduct electricity it has a conductivity measurement of zero. By adding soluble elements to the water, electricity is able to move through the solution giving it a conductivity rating.

Conductivity is measured using various scales. The scales the Truncheon will provide you is EC (Electrical Conductivity), CF (Conductivity Factor), ppm 500 (parts per million) which is also known as TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and ppm 700.

What scale should I use?

EC and CF are the only two absolute scales of conductivity, however the USA mainly uses the ppm 500 scale (also known as TDS). The UK mainly uses the ppm 700 scale.

What maintenance does it need?

Nearly all conductivity meters need to be calibrated. The great thing is, the Bluelab Truncheon Meter does not need to be calibrated as this is locked in during manufacture. The only maintenance it requires is cleaning the probe and changing the batteries. ‘The instrument is only as accurate as the probe is clean’ – easy probe cleaning and a quick test is all you need to do to keep the Truncheon Meter operating perfectly for years!

What accessories come with it?

Batteries are included when you buy the Truncheon meter, but the Conductivity Cleaning kit is for maintaining the Truncheon Meter and is sold separately.

Check out how easy it is to clean the BluelabTruncheon Meter!

Milwaukee Brix/Sugar Refractometer for general purpose with ATC has a range of 0-32% brix, and a resolution of 0.1%. Use this item to gauge the health of your plants by measuring their sugar content. This meter method is used by horticulturalists to indicate plant stress before the plant shows symptoms. Simple to use- just extract one drop of liquid from the petiole tissue (leaf stem) and easily measure sugar content.

What is the Brix scale?

The Balling Scale was developed by German chemist Karl Balling. It refers to the concentration of a dissolved solids (mostly sucrose) , as the weight percentage sucrose at 17.5 °C.

The Brix scale was originally derived when Adolf Ferdinand Wenceslaus Brix recalculated Balling’s scale to a reference temperature of 15.5 °C. The Brix scale was subsequently recalculated again, and now uses a reference temperature of 20 °C. Brix can be approximated as 261.3*(1 – 1/g), where g is the specific gravity of the solution at 20 °C.

Brix is primarily used in fruit juice, wine making and the sugar industry. Brix is used in the food industry for measuring the approximate amount of sugars in fruits, vegetables, juices, wine, soft drinks and in the sugar manufacturing industry. For fruit juices, one degree Brix is about 1-2% sugar by weight. This usually correlates well with perceived sweetness. Since Brix is related to the concentration of dissolved solids (mostly sucrose) in a fluid it is therefore related to the specific gravity of the liquid. Because the specific gravity of sucrose solutions is well known, it can also be measured by a refractometer.

Modern Brix meters are digital refractometers that calculate the Brix value based on refractive index. These meters are typically portable, splash-proof and very simple to use, so that they can be operated by anybody directly on location. More and more often Brix is measured to determine ideal harvesting times of fruit and vegetables so that products arrive at the consumers in a perfect state or are ideal for subsequent processing steps such as vinification.

Milwaukee Refractometer

The Milwaukee Refractometer series are precision optical instruments used for measuring concentrations of substances in aqueous solutions. They work using the principle of light refraction trough liquids. When passing light trough a liquid the refracted angle will be shown on the scale determining the amount of dissolved solids in the liquid.

The Milwaukee refractometer is very simple to use: simply place one drop of your sample on the prism and read the results on the scale immediately!

All the Milwaukee refractometers have adjustable focus, easy to read numbers for good resolution and zero adjustment screw for calibration.

Each Milwaukee refractometer is calibrated and adjusted to measure at 20°C (68°F). Models with Automatic Temperature Compensations are also available, and are suitable, for applications where the temperature of the samples vary.
