Preparing Containers for Potted Plants

Cover drain hole with small rocks or a shard of broken pottery to ensure good drainage.  Add enough Ocean Forest Potting Soil so the plant sits at the correct level.  Fill in around the root mass with more potting soil up to one inch from the top of pot.  Press gently to secure plant.  Water thoroughly and let drain.  Do not pack too tightly.  Add more potting soil if necessary with setting.  For repotting plants, select a container that is one or two sizes larger than the one being replaced.  Loosen roots from the root mass and use the same procedure as above.

Gardens

When preparing new garden areas, till a 3-6 inch layer of potting soil to a minimum depth of 8-12 inches.  Water thoroughly after planting.

Raised Beds

Prepare planting beds by amending existing soil with composting organic matter.  Fill the top 8-12 inches of bed with potting soil.

Ingredients

Composted forest humus, sphagnum peat moss, Pacific Northwest sea-going fish, crab meal, shrimp meal, earthworm castings, vermicultural compost (bedding material and livestock manure), sandy loam, perlite, fossilized bat guano, granite dust, Norwegian kelp meal and oyster shell (for pH adjustment).

Start your plants off organically with Root Riot Starter Cubes.

From Growth Technology, Root Riot Starter Cubes are organic starter cubes derived from naturally composted tree bark for starting seeds and root cuttings. This product is ideal for use with soil or hydroponics. A perfect air to water capacity insures healthy roots and faster, more vigorous rooting. Once rooted or started, seedlings are easily transplanted into soil, soil-less mixes, and virtually any other medium. Root Riot Cubes are 100 %organic and fully biodegradable.

What are starter cubes?

Starter cubes are made of an inert material, that is a material that doesn’t provide anything to the plant other than as a support for the plant and its roots. Starter cubes cubes retain water well but also retain enough air so that the medium doesn’t stay too wet. Root Riot

Root Riot Starter Cubes are available in a prewrapped insert of 50 cubes nestled in a standard 10 inch by 20 inch nursery tray for immediate use that includes a 15mg single use packet of Clonex Rooting Compound that will treat up to 50 cuttings.

Root Riot Starter Cubes are also available in a refill bag containing 100 pre-moistened, ready to use cubes in a resealable plastic bag.

How to use Root Riot Starter Cubes.

The Root Riot Starter Cubes are easy-to use! The cubes need only to be saturated and then allowed to drain. These cubes are now ready to use. Once the starter cubes are prepared you can plant the seed(s). Using the tip of a pen or pencil make a small hole in the top of the cube approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep (if there is not one already). Place the seed(s) into the hole and gently cover the seed(s) by packing some of the seed cube material from around the hole over the seed. Start a regular feeding program two weeks after first use. For best result with cuttings, use with Clonex Rooting Compound Gel.

The seed cubes should be kept moist but not wet. They should never be allowed to sit in water. The cubes will not require light until after the seeds sprout. The plants don’t require any nutrient until they have formed their first “true” leaves. When they develop the first true leaves you can start giving them a diluted nutrient solution (1/4 to 1/2 strength).

How to transplant your seedlings.

Once the seedlings have grown roots out of the starter cubes it is time to transplant the plants. This is simply a matter of placing the plant and starter cube into or on top of your permanent growing medium. This growing medium can be any hydroponic growing medium or even soil.
