Flame Defender

There are many electrical devices in today’s indoor growing environments. Power strips, CO2 generators, heat mats, lights, light movers, reservoir heaters, fans, pumps, etc., can malfunction and cause a fire. Protect yourself, your growing environment and your home. Install a Flame Defender™ today!

ABC – This is the multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher. The ABC type is filled with monoammonium phosphate, a yellow powder that leaves a sticky residue that may be damaging to electrical appliances such as a computer. Dry chemical extinguishers have an advantage over CO2 extinguishers since they leave a non-flammable substance on the extinguished material, reducing the likelihood of re-ignition.

Class A extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics. The numerical rating on these types of extinguishers indicates the amount of water it holds and the amount of fire it can extinguish.

Class B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil. The numerical rating for class B extinguishers indicates the approximate number of square feet of fire it can extinguish.

Class C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers and outlets. Never use water to extinguish class C fires – the risk of electrical shock is far too great! Class C extinguishers do not have a numerical rating. The C classification means the extinguishing agent is non-conductive.

Self contained – No plumbing or wiring required.

Simply install by attaching vertically to the wall or ceiling.

Automatic – extinguishing agent is automatically dispensed if the temperature probe on the unit reaches 155° F.

Multi-purpose dry chemical extinguisher.

Rated for A, B & C.

Suitable for electrical fires.

Discharges a hemispherical spray pattern in area under sprinkler.

Hygrozyme, the horticultural Enzyme Formula, is the cleaner solution with guaranteed results. Prevents pythium and algae, speeds up degradation of dead matter and chemical nutrient assimilation. Bacteria Free and Doctor Recommended. OMRI and QMI approved. Welcome back to work!

About Hygrozym
HYGROZYME is the result of over 10 years of research, testing and approvals to get it to market. HYGROZYME was developed, perfected and field-tested with the help of hydro growers, farmers and industry professionals such as: members of various grower’s co-ops in California, Pacific Agricultural Research Center and B.C. Research Council chemists.

HYGROZYME may well be “the greatest breakthrough in Horticulture in the last decade.” Simply explained: it is developed using a proprietary bio-fermentation process, made from ALL NATURAL ingredients that produce a supply of BACTERIA-FREE enzymes and complex chains of amino acids.

With HYGROZYME there is no longer a need to introduce or create crop vulnerability by introducing a foreign germ culture to your sterile growing environment. After reviewing current enzymatic market products, it was determined that HYGROZYME actually incorporates all the benefits and capabilities offered by leading enzyme products AND MUCH, MUCH MORE – all in one Powerful Formula! With HYGROZYME though, there are NO concerns of a limited shelf life or spoilage.

INHERENT ABILITIES: Root protection.
INCREDIBLE RESULT: BIGGER, STRONGER, FASTER, HEALTHY, LUSH.
CONCLUSION: IF IT WAS A RACE – HYGROZYME IS THE WINNER!

Brrr…Is it cold in here or is it just the new Frostbox Industrial Air Conditioner with Quick Connects? Put your money on the latter, because this A/C unit comes with quick connects, making it super easy to keep your grow room as cool as a cucumber. The Frostbox A/C comes in two sizes, 3-Ton and 5-Ton, and both come with an outdoor condensing unit and indoor air handler, and did we mention they come with quick connects?

Question, what are quick connects? Answer, piping pre-charged with Freon making the unit Plug & Play, eliminating the need for an HVAC technician to perform the installation, while saving you hundreds of dollars. Cha-ching!! These units come with top and bottom Plenums, which make for easy installation of ducting to the top and bottom of air handlers (Note: These are not usually included with other units like the Stealth ACs from Excel Air).

We don’t want to brag, but the Frostbox Industrial Air Conditioner with Quick Connects is AHRI certified, ETL listed, fully insulated in a steel cabinet with rust-resistant, galvanized, leather grain-embossed finish with painted front panels…we could go on…so we will! Direct drive, multi-speed motor, BAM! Brass, rust-free fittings, POW! Vertical OR horizontal mounting, ZING! Are you still not a fan? Here’s something extra, how about we throw in a coil with horizontal upflow and downflow drain pans and secondary drain connects, and we’ll also include a filter rack for a 1” filter? Oh, wait…those are already built-in!

Last but not least, Ba da da da, Frostbox can come equipped with a day/night thermostat, a check flowrater expansion device that provides cooling for 4 heat pump applications, and a damper control package; allowing you to control two rooms with one system, and also a UV air purifier; mountable inside the Top Plenum, which will kill harmful spores and bacteria in your grow area. Those are all add-ons that are guaranteed to make sure you and your grow room stays cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Summertime is around the corner, and temperatures are going to have adverse effects on your grow room. If you think you are going to keep your crops cool with a mini, battery-operated hand fan, you are surely in for a surprise. Instead, shell out the extra clams and get a Frostbox – your plants and your friends will appreciate you for it.

Visit FrostboxUSA.com for more information and a list of distributors in your area.

The following article was written by Knate of our very own Whittier store. Knate started a company called Take A Stand that produces accessories for your grow tray. We asked him to let you know how he started his company and what kind of products they are offering.
Here is his story:

TAKE A STAND started with my first “ebb n’ flow” setup.

I needed a tray support that could hold substantial weight and that was tall and wide enough to clear the reservoir without stealing my precious vertical space. I wanted materials that wouldn’t rust or mold, were lightweight and easy to move, and easy to disassemble.

I decided to “Take A Stand” and eradicate this common problem.

My first solution is the MONO STAND:

Supports over 500 lbs!

Is a reservoir and ceiling convenient:

16”Tall

31”Wide

40” Long

Slides right under a 4×4 or 3×3 grow tray with ease

Easily support a 3×6 or 4×8 table when two stands are placed side-by-side

Features an optional wheel kit – coming out soon!

Next on my mission was the perfect solution for trellis; I wanted a sturdy frame to stretch and secure the netting that retained the same attributes as the MONO STAND; durable, lightweight, convenient and efficient.

Thus, I created the MONO TRELLIS frame:

Fits standard nylon 5’x15’ tomato trellis netting (use zip ties to ensure a tight fit).

Is 50” x 50”

This frame is lightweight and very effective when hung with light yoyos, ratchets or chain over a 4×4 canopy.

The MONO TRELLIS frame covers the whole tray and allows you to safely and easily maintain an even canopy height and prevents smashing your plants.

The MONO TRELLIS provides a sturdy crutch for those massive flowers that resemble me after one too many drinks (falling all over the place).

These are great quality; American made and built to last for years to come.

Also, custom sizing is available with a minimum order of 20 units.

I don’t know about you but I am definitely going to TAKE A STAND with my next setup.

The ebb & gro multi-pot hydroponics system uses (2) two-gallon buckets and Hydroton as a growing medium.
Hydroton pebbles are derived from clay and are considered an ecologically sustainable medium. It is often known by the name LECA – Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate . The clay is formed into pellets and fired in rotary kilns at 1200C, causing it to expand inside and become porous. Expanded clay is light in weight, will not compact, and can be cleaned & sterilized for reuse. Hydroton pebbles are inert, pH neutral and contain no nutrients. The Hydroton pellets drain freely and don’t hold excessive water. They provide excellent oxygen levels around the roots. Hydroton is pH neutral and does not degrade. For best results, rinse Hydroton well before using to rid the grow media of excess dust and sterilize in between crops by using a bleach solution.

The lower buckets of the ebb & gro multi-pot hydroponics system have a ½” tubing line connected to the bottom that links the 2 gallon “modules” to the controller bucket. The top bucket of this multi-pot hydroponics system has a series of holes punched through the bottom. These holes allow the water to percolate up through the holes when filling or drain back down when in the drain cycle.

When the systems “fills” water is pumped from the 55-gallon reservoir into the controller bucket. The 3 ½ gallon controller bucket has several float switches installed, which keeps the water at the proper levels during the filling and draining cycles.

As the water flows from the highest point (the controller bucket) to the lowest point (each of the 2 gallon modules) gravity provides the mechanism to ensure that all the buckets are filled to the proper level. As the water enters the bottom of the 2-gallon “catch” bucket under very low pressure, it slowly fills from the bottom of the inner bucket to submerge the roots in freshly circulated nutrient water. In the process, gasses that are expelled by the roots are pushed up and out of the root zone.

Once the water has been distributed to all of the modules, the pump is shut off. A timer controls how long the fill cycle is and how long the drain cycle is.

Individual pots (modules) allow you to easily move / relocate plants.

Each EBB-1 controller can control from 6 up to 48 plant sites… plenty of room for expansion.

A smaller reservoir (55-gal) can be used with less water compared to flood & drain tables.

Reservoir does not have to be lower than the plants!

The EBB-1 controller is all you need to control all pumping and level control functions.

“Active” hydroponics system compared to rockwool resulting in faster growth and larger yields.

First the CHHC-1 has all of the CO2 control features of the Sentinel CPPM-1. This All in one climate controller also has the ability to control 3 other devices: a cooling device, a heating device and humidity device. As with all of Sentinel’s climate controls, the CHHC-1 controller is simple to use. You can set separate day and night temperature settings as well as humidity settings. This climate controller even records the Min and Max temperature, humidity and CO2 levels. Unlike some CO2 controllers, the Sentinel CHHC-1 is able to be calibrated by the user with our “self calibration feature.”

Sentinel CHHC-1 Advantages

Monitors and controls CO2 with PPM accuracy

Also controls 3 other devices, a heating device. a cooling device and a humidity device.

Separate day/night temp and humidity settings.

Records the min and maxi temp, humidity and CO2 levels.

Has 2 separate outputs to control cooling and heating.

Can increase or decrease the amount of humidity in the growing area.

Remote temp, humidity, CO2 and light level sensor

Climate Controller Overview

There are 3 environmental conditions which must be controlled for productive indoor growing. Independent settings on the CHHC-1 make it easy to accurately control your “atmosphere” inside the area.

Temperature is up first. The CHHC-1 has 2 separate outputs to control cooling and heating. Next is humidity and the CHHC-1 can either increase or decrease the amount of humidity inside the area. The third is CO2 PPM. This climate controller controls carbon dioxide with Part-Per-Million accuracy. This climate controller also features a remote combination Temperature, Humidity, CO2 & Light level sensor module that can be located inside the growing area. For indoor growing, Cooling devices such as ventilation fans or air-conditioners connect to the Cooling Device receptacle and heaters for cooler climate greenhouses can be connected to the Heat Device receptacle. Connect your 120 volt compressed CO2 solenoid / regulator assembly to the CO2 receptacle. Dehumidifier or a humidifier can be connected to the Humidity Device receptacle.

Steve Encell and his 9-year-old son Pace planted their pumpkin seeds two months late, but they still managed to take home first and third places at the Third Annual San Luis Obispo County Great Pumpkin Contest held Thursday, Oct. 16, at the Farmers Market in downtown SLO.

“I try and find really interesting and fun projects for my son and I to do throughout the year, and it was really a great experience,” said Encell, a Ballard resident.

Encell and Pace planted “Godzilla,” their 790-pound award-winning pumpkin, in late May. Most pumpkin growers try to plant their seeds in mid-March, two months earlier in the growing season, Encell said.

“We pretty much have to defy nature constantly. There is nothing natural about growing large pumpkins,” Encell said.

“It was really fun. My friends were impressed with how big they got,” Pace added.

Pace’s favorite part of growing the pumpkins, he said, was getting to sit on top of them and take pictures with his pets.

The two kept a diary of their experience on www.bigpumpkins.com, a forum for people trying to grow the largest pumpkin and learn from those who have learned the tricks of the trade.

“We really received great advice from the growers online. They are the ones who taught Pace and I that putting sand under the pumpkin prevents rot, and to turn the pumpkin sideways so the vine doesn’t break when it gets large,” Encell said.

Encell and Pace also put chicken wire underneath the pumpkin to prevent gophers from digging underneath and destroying it.

In mid-August, according to Encell’s diary, Godzilla was growing 14 pounds per day. By the end of that month the pumpkin was growing 35 pounds overnight.

“Green Coast Hydroponics in Santa Barbara ordered us special fertilizer and they were all excited about our project. They decided to help us out for next year’s competition as well,” Encell said.

A week before the contest, Godzilla was taken off the vine and weighed just over 800 pounds. Since the pumpkin wasn’t receiving any nutrients, it shrunk to 790 pounds by the time the judges weighed it.

Godzilla’s victory won $750 for the father and son, who also $250 for their other pumpkin, “PeeWee,” which took third place at 589 pounds. They also beat last year’s record by 75 pounds.

See how Encell and his son are doing this year with the pumkin diary
