Some plants prefer a slightly acidic soil. Bitter is used to describe alkaline soils or high pH soil. Testing your soil’s pH balance (and nutrient levels) should be a routine task for gardeners.

The amount of moisture found in soil varies greatly with they type of soil, climate and the amount of humus (organic material) in that soil. Measuring soil moisture is important in gardening so that gardeners can manage their irrigation more efficiently. Not only are gardeners able to generally use less water to grow a crop, they are able to increase yields and the quality of the crop by better management of soil moisture during critical plant growth stages. A moisture meter can assist in accurately determining your optimal moisture level of your soil.
